Background of Establishing the Directorate General of Food: To combat the great Bengal famine, the provincial Bengal Government issued “Bengal rationing Order/1943” and established “Bengal Civil Supplies Department”. After the emerge of Bangladesh “Food and Civil Supplies Ministry" came into being as a new Ministry and under this Ministry an organization was formed in the name of “Directorate General of Food”.
Purpose of establishing the Directorate General of Food:
- To supply food stuff and essential commodities to the consumers (Import food grains, rationing).
- To build up emergency stocks (Buffer stock);
- To attain self-sufficiency in producing food grains (Internal Procurement).
- To expand social safety net like VGD, VGF, FFW, TR, GR etc.;
- To maintain the price of food grain stable (Through OMS, Fair Price Card).
Target:
- To introduce effective and reliable food grain procurement, supply and distribution management.
- To achieve farmer and consumer friendly food grain pricing.
- To introduce effective and updated food distribution system.
- Introducing fruitful food management system to face drought, famine and food crisis.
- To help the poor and socially deprived people collect their food.
- To adjust food Safety Policy with disaster management/relief distribution system.
- To supply food grains to the target oriented people.
- To make professionalism able and efficient work force.
